If departing from Ho Chi Minh City to the south, the first bustling city of the Mekong Delta you come across is My Tho. The city has a long commercial history starting in 1680 when Chinese merchants migrated to Viet Nam. At the end of the 19th century, the French built a railway from Saigon to My Tho, helping this city become a leading rice export center. Today, vestiges of the colonial era can be seen in the stately French mansions located on the left bank of the Mekong River.

About 15 minutes by boat from My Tho pier, there are 4 islands located between Tien Giang province and Ben Tre province, named after 4 sacred animals: Unicorn, Dragon, Turtle and Phoenix. The largest island is Thoi Son or Unicorn with an area of 1,200 hectares and the smallest is Turtle, with only 65 hectares. Coming to these islands, visitors can admire the typical houses of rural Viet Nam with three rooms covered by tiled roofs where people from many different generations live together. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy fresh air in well-maintained longan, banana and dragon fruit gardens. You can see traditional production professions such as wine distillation, coconut candy making, hand embroidery, beekeeping, etc. at many local homes, etc.
