Team building in Phuoc Tich, Hue.

Hue is not only well known for the temples and mausoleums of the Nguyen Dynasty but also Phuoc Tich, an ancient village 40km north of Hue. It has a special trading position attached to the O Lau River, where the river forms a nearly circular bend, surrounding an oasis with a diameter of about 500m, before pouring water into Tam Giang lagoon, which used to be an important waterway before.

Established in 1479, Phuoc Tich ancient village still preserves many valuable tangible heritages, including: 13 religious relics, 28 ancestral houses and the number of residence houses. Among the 117 houses of residents, there are 26 ancient houses, and 12 houses have special architectural and artistic value. In the ground of the wooden house, there are almost no extraneous structures built, most of them retain the typical traditional values of Hue garden houses, including: gate, fences made of Chinese tea trees, entrance paths – lined with Chinese tea fences on both sides, feng shui screen, shallow pool, rockery, yard, main house, outhouse, garden, water tank. In addition, many traditional occupations are still preserved, such as growing lotus & making lotus tea, making pottery, etc.

Phuoc Tich ceramics are fired using traditional methods. Phuoc Tich ceramic products are famous everywhere and were previously supplied to the royal court. Although unglazed, ceramic is still waterproof because it is fired at high temperatures. Photo: Exotic Vietnam

Coming to Phuoc Tich, immerse yourself in the romantic atmosphere of gentle rivers, fragrant lotus ponds, straight neatly-trimmed Chinese tea fences, creaky old bamboo clusters, and an old tree covered in moss for hundreds of years. What is unusual compared to the Red River Delta is that the architectural works in Phuoc Tich are not locked between walls but have an open structure. Both religious and residential structures are connected by shady brick-covered paths, and vividly connected to 12 riverside wharfs, formerly the ceramic trading places of Phuoc Tich pottery village during its golden age.

Prof. Dr. Architect Hoang Dao Kinh commented: “People are used to thinking that long-time-ago and ancient things must be located in the North. Arriving at Phuoc Tich, I was truly amazed. It is an ancient Vietnamese village dating back to the 15th century.” The rural space of the North Central region and its traditional values still keep intact in Phuoc Tich village. On June 13, 2009, Phuoc Tich ancient village was the second village recognized as a National architectural and artistic relic of Vietnam.
