Corporate culture has become a crucial determining factor for the success of an organization. A strong and positive corporate culture not only promotes cohesion, strengthens loyalty, and forms an effective team aligned towards common goals, but also directly impacts productivity and profitability. An essential tool for forming and nurturing a healthy corporate culture is team building. We invite you to read the article “Team building, need to understand in a different way” by PACE Institute of Management.
“Team building programs, from the perspective of the participants or the program designers and implementers, should also admit one thing, which is that there needs to be a different way of understanding and doing team building.
For administrators, team building is truly an important tool for the team to recognize, understand, trust, feel motivated and live with those values. For employees, team building is an opportunity for each person to discover themselves in addition to understanding teammates, and contributing to forming a strong team. To do so requires the agency that designs and implements the team building program to have an accurate view and understanding of corporate culture, develop human capacity and in addition to owning a team with professional organizational procedure.
However, in reality, the word “team building” is currently being poorly understood by both service users and service providers, lacking depth, leading to a relatively superficial implementation, failing to achieve the goal.
For many agencies providing services, the word “building” is being viewed very lightly, simply as making people happy and connected to each other. Team building is even considered a year-end vacation to relax after tiring days of work. There is nothing wrong with the above purposes, but they are vacations combined with fun, not team building. Of course, team bonding is one of the important purposes of team building, but again, the way this is viewed is limited, making the design and implementation not really effective.
Try this simple visualization, think of someone you feel connected to. Do you feel connected because they are happy with you? Or do they treat you well? Not necessarily even though those things are necessary. To bond with someone, you and that person truly understand each other. This means that you and this person must dare to live truthfully with each other, finding similarities in values and ideologies. It will be impossible to bond if both partners do not open their hearts, do not dare to have good thoughts about each other, are willing to forgive past mistakes, and most importantly, are willing to accept and respect differences and each person’s unique characteristics to move in the same direction.
Thus, its nature of cohesion does not come from being happy or unhappy, but from the openness between two souls that have many differences but are placed in a broader common circle.
A small example like that shows us that connecting two people is not simple, let alone connecting a team at work. Therefore, team building activities cannot be superficial and just fun. These must be training experiences, helping participants discover about themselves and their teammates, thereby revealing things that the daily work environment rarely gives us the opportunity to see.
But “cohesion” is not the ultimate goal of team building. Engagement is just the first step in the process of building and developing a strong team. The word “team building” here means that. To have a strong team, in addition to cohesion, it must also be a team with a common heart, a common goal, and know how to work together smoothly based on an understanding of strengths, weaknesses and core competencies. of each person to complement each other; It must be a team with its own personality but placed on a common cultural foundation, built on universal principles. That is the result of building and strengthening corporate culture. Team building is one of the important tools for doing that. Besides, teambuilding is also a great opportunity to practice leadership skills, problem solving, creative thinking at work, etc.
For businesses using team building services, if we do not understand properly and fully, we are wasting our money and effort. We invest a fairly large amount of money but don’t even know the purpose of the investment. Then we leave it entirely to the organization agency, which is what many businesses are facing.
Understand correctly and enough to have reasonable expectations, and at the same time clearly see your role in accompanying service providers and not leave it all up to them. Only then will team building activities not be considered a cost, but on the contrary, a worthy investment and a priority in the process of building corporate culture and creating a strong team.”
